We are all weird

Thoughts of the day

David Lynch is a controversial figure in the realm of film. His work tends to be dark, misinterpreted, sometimes impossible to assign meaning to.

Lynch often explores the concept of dreams, giving audiences access to a world that is still so impossible to grasp, even to the dreamers themselves. Carl Jung said, “the dream is the theater where the dreamer is at once: scene, actor, prompter, stage manager, author, audience, and critic.” In our dreams, though, we might lack control of the direction, which is why perhaps Lynch chooses to ‘own’ dreams by recreating them through his work.

Looking beneath the drapes of someone’s dream can reveal many hidden truths. By revealing what we sometimes do not want to admit, even to ourselves, our dreams, like Lynch’s work, might serve another purpose: to remind us that we are all truly weirder than we would like to believe.

“Boy Lights Fire,” 2010, is part of the Bonnefanten Museum’s David Lynch retrospective.
