Summer is once again upon us, though its difference to previous years is hard to ignore. There are no exotic holidays planned, no flights to idyllic islands to dream about. Cities bustling with tourists will, for once, be saved for the locals. For the first time in years, we might have to settle for what we have.
The word ‘vacation’ implies movement, leaving something that was occupied to go somewhere else. But not being able to travel far physically makes us look at what is around us, but also within. Suddenly, every evening is an opportunity, every weekend a holiday. Vacating the mind is also an option.
Even Edward Hopper’s lonely characters find solace on a balcony, in Second Story Sunlight.
