When money loses its meaning, where does value go?
Artists Donald and Era Farnsworth started their Art Notes: The Almighty Dollar series in 2004, to satirise the fiscal policies of the Bush-Cheney administration by taking dollar bills and painting over them.
Though the satire has remained consistent, the artists soon also started portraying respected figures from history, art, and literature, using the bill as a platform to pay homage to those they felt indebted to.
With global markets crashing, this is a good time to wonder what the price of money is, and what things we should choose to place value on.
“It is impossible to escape the impression that people commonly use false standards of measurement — that they seek power, success and wealth for themselves and admire them in others, and that they underestimate what is of true value in life.”
― Sigmund Freud
