Working in a creative field will often mean one needs to face the demons of conformity, entering the dangerous territory of thinking the most creative is the work deemed so by others. Creativity does have a value, but it pays to remember that value is not associated with the dollar sign.
If feelings cannot (yet) be measured, then what is a truthful reference point for one’s creative output?
Oscar-winning director of Parasite, Bong Joon Ho, quoted Martin Scorsese in his acceptance speech, saying, “the most personal is the most creative.”
A personal touch can add a hint of sparkle to an otherwise dull, ordinary tale.
Being brave enough to look inwards and to be ourselves, in whatever context, can be what distinguishes between glory and mediocrity, between making something memorable or something safe.
That is also why most successful startups come not just from the perfect product-market fit, but from a founder’s ability to see something in themselves that could add true value to the world.
After all, every story is better told when it is done by someone who lived it.
